Conner Johnson, a 2016 graduate of Kenai Central High School, was named second team all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at offensive line Tuesday.

Johnson is a true sophomore at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. He was one of the youngest players on the offensive second team, joined by one other true sophomore and a freshman.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pounder was playing on the offensive line in college for the first time this year. Last year, he started at defensive end and had 27 tackles and an interception resulting in a touchdown.

Johnson started the season at right tackle, but an injury forced him to move to left tackle. On Oct. 21, Adams State lost to Colorado Mesa University 70-21 and Johnson had to face off against Blake Nelson, who would be named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. Nelson did not record a sack in the game. Also, in the second week of October, Johnson was named Offensive Player of the Week for ASU.

Adams State, a Division II school, finished 4-7 overall this season. The Grizzlies had one player on the RMAC first team, three on the second team and three get honorable mention.

Nikiski graduate McCormick wins Pac 7 title

Jonathon McCormick, a 2016 graduate of Nikiski High School, helped the football team of Shasta College, located in Redding, California, win the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California American Division Championship Bowl on Saturday.

Shasta defeated Monterey Peninsula for the title 45-38 in overtime.

McCormick played four years at Nikiski High School, going to the Division III state final each year, before spending last season attending school at the University of Alaska Anchorage while letting a knee injury heal.

The 5-foot-9, 230-pound freshman played linebacker and long snapper for the Knights this season and had a solo tackle in the championship game.

Shasta had its first game of the season canceled due to wildfires, then lost three straight. However, the squad recovered to win its final seven games of the year.
