Kenai Central senior Brooke Satathite signed a National Letter of Intent on Monday to run cross-country and track for Division II Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado.
Kardinals cross-country coach Maria Calvert said the school fits both Satathite’s athletic talents and academic aspirations.
Calvert said Satathite is looking at going into teaching, and Western Colorado State has a good education program.
Satathite, the daughter of Sam and Jennifer of Kenai, will join a cross-country program that finished fourth at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships last fall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After playing volleyball in middle school, Satathite went out for cross-country as a freshman and made an immediate impact, finishing at Kenai’s No. 5 runner at the state meet as the Kards took the Class 4A state title. She went on to finish in the top five in the region and the top 15 in the state in her sophomore through senior years. This fall, she helped the Kardinals win the Division II state cross-country title.
“She definitely worked hard to be great,” Calvert said. “She really helped her team every single year.”
In track, she made it to state as a sophomore and junior in the 800 and 1,600 runs, and the 3,200-meter relay. Her personal record in the 800 is 2 minutes, 23.64 seconds, while her PR in the 1,600 is 5:22.85.
