Oilers drop 2 to Chinooks

The Peninsula Oilers dropped Friday and Saturday games to the Chugiak Chinooks in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped Friday, dropped to 11-22 in the Alaska Baseball League. With the Anchorage Glacier Pilots and Anchorage Bucs still playing late Saturday, the Oilers were two games behind the Bucs for the fourth and final playoff spot in the ABL. The Oilers have seven games left to play.

The Oilers continue a 10-game homestand with a five-game series against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Seymour Park.

Friday, the Chinooks raced to a 15-7 victory.

Chugiak led 4-0 after the top of the third, but the Oilers tied it at 4 in the bottom of the inning. The Chinooks went up 6-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Oilers got one back in the bottom of the inning.

Chugiak then scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to take control of the game.

Ben Briggs took the loss for the Oilers, allowing six runs — three earned — in 4 1-3 innings. Lee Atkinson gave up six runs in 2 1-3 innings, while Dylan Crowley gave up three runs in 2 1-3 innings.

At the plate, Garrett Pennington homered and finished with two runs and three RBIs. Trevor Antonson was 2 for 5, while John Hanley added a hit and three RBIs. Ben Grunberg had the other hit for the Oilers.

Saturday, the Chinooks notched a 4-2 victory in 10 innings.

Chinooks starter and winner Zach Sundine lasted all 10 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out nine.

The Oilers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Chugiak fought back with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, then scored two in the top of the 10th for the win.

Andre Orselli took the loss for the Oilers, giving up the runs in the 10th, with only one being earned.

Mason Posey gave up a run on two hits in six innings for the Oilers, while Jacob Dillon gave up a run on two hits in three innings.

Dylan Ditzenberger had a hit and a run for the Oilers, while Cole Moore had a hit, Garrett Pennington had a hit, Bryce Marsh had a run and Owen Christy had a hit.
