Oilers drop opener on road to Miners

Two former Oilers pitchers set to meet in big leagues Tuesday

The Peninsula Oilers opened their 2024 season with a 9-2 loss to the Mat-Su Miners on Sunday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer in Alaska Baseball League play.

The Miners are now 3-1.

The Oilers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Mat-Su had an 8-1 lead by the end of the sixth inning. The Oilers scored their other run in the seventh inning.

Center fielder Colin Robson led the Oilers by finishing 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Robson had a home run and a double.

Jacob Tabor took the loss for the Oilers, giving up four runs on four hits in three innings. He walked four and struck out one.

Aaron Morris also gave up four runs in three innings, yielding two hits and two walks while striking out two.

Seth Bougher gave up a run in two innings on four hits.

The Oilers stay on the road to face the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium at 6 p.m. Monday.

The home opener is June 18 at 6 p.m. against the Miners.

In other Oilers news, two former Oilers pitchers are schedule to tangle in the Major Leagues when the Chicago White Sox play the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. AKST.

Drew Thorpe is scheduled to make his big league debut for the White Sox. Thorpe pitched for the Oilers in 2019. Thorpe, 23, has a 1.35 ERA with 56 strikeouts for Double-A Birmingham this season.

Woo, 24, was the 2019 ABL Prospect of the Year while pitching for the Oilers. This year, he is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA for the Mariners.
