The Peninsula Oilers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Thursday in nonleague play at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.
The Oilers are now 0-2-1, while the Goldpanners are 2-0-1. The Oilers now jump into Alaska Baseball League play with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Saturday against the Anchorage Bucs.
Thursday in the game scheduled for seven innings, the Goldpanners jumped to a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the second, but the Oilers came back to tie the game with a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth. The Panners won it with a score in the bottom of the sixth.
Seth Mattox got the start for Peninsula, going three innings and giving up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
James Shimashita then came on and pitched a pair of scoreless and hitless innings, striking out a pair in the process.
Jacob Shaver gave up a run on a hit in an inning to get tagged with the loss. Shaver struck out two in the inning.
The Oilers got their run in the fifth inning when Willie Schwarick led off the inning with a double. Casey Burnham then singled to put runners on first and third. Shunsuke Sakaino then followed with another single to score Schwarick.
In the sixth inning, Shaver started the inning with a walk. He eventually scored on a single by Graiden West.
Noah Hennings finished 2 for 3 for the Oilers, while Burnham was 2 for 4.
