The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Mat-Su Miners 9-2 on Sunday in Alaska Baseball League play at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
Peninsula won three straight games for the first time all season by pulling away from Mat-Su late. After the Miners had tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Oilers scored six runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth.
The Anchorage Bucs lead the ABL at 15-10, while the Miners are 1.5 games back at 13-11, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots are two games back at 12-11, the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks are four games back at 10-13 and the Oilers are five games back at 8-13.
Oilers starter Ty Correa and reliever William Grimm combined to give up no earned runs.
Correa gave up two unearned runs on seven hits in seven innings while striking out three and walking none.
Grimm pitched a scoreless two innings, giving up two hits while striking out two and walking one.
The one walk by the Oilers staff was a far cry from the 10 walks and two hit batters by the Miners.
Reliever Will Rizzo took the loss for the Miners. He was inserted in the top of the eighth and gave up six runs on a hit in two-thirds of an inning, walking four and striking out one.
Theo Forshey led the Oilers at the plate by going 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Nick Costello had two runs and two hits, Drewbie Pinkston had two runs and Owen McElfatrick had two RBIs.
The Oilers continue the road trip Monday when they travel to Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak to take on the Chinooks at 6 p.m.
