The visiting Homer softball team came back from a 4-1 deficit after the first inning to notch a 28-10 victory over Soldotna in five innings Thursday in Northern Lights Conference play.
Homer moves to 8-3 overall, while the Stars fall to 3-8 overall.
The Mariners jumped on top 7-4 with six runs in the top of the second inning. Homer then led 16-4 after the top of the third, but SoHi cut it to 16-8 after three.
But Homer’s offense kept humming. Homer led 20-8 after the top of the four, and SoHi was able to get two back in the bottom of the fourth.
The Mariners went up 28-10 after the top of the fifth. When SoHi didn’t score in the bottom of the frame, the mercy rule was invoked.
Homer was able to pile up 19 hits in the game, with Grace Godfrey leading the way by going 3 for 5 with three runs, a home run and four RBIs.
Also for Homer, Hannah Hatfield was 2 for 3 with four runs and five RBIs, Ariana Davis was 2 for 6 with two runs and two RBIs, Delilah Harris had three runs, Emily Owens had four RBIs, Zoe Adkins was 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBIs, Alaiyah Brost had three runs, Kahleah Fraley was 2 for 2 and Fiona Hatton had three runs.
The Stars piled up 13 hits of their own. Emily Hinz was 2 for 4, Katie Hinz was 2 for 4 with two runs, Ashlyn Asp was 2 for 3 with two runs, Lexi Stormo was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs, Miah Mead had two runs, Makynzi Deborski was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Bailey Conner was 2 for 3.
Adkins went the distance at pitcher for Homer, giving up 10 runs on 13 hits while walking two and striking out seven. Mead also went the whole game at pitcher for Soldotna.
Soldotna baseball 19, Homer 5
The visiting Stars notched a Southcentral Conference victory Thursday to move to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in the league. Homer falls to 1-6 in the league and 1-12 overall.
The Stars were in control throughout the game, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning and 7-1 lead after the third inning.
By the end of the top of the fifth inning, Soldotna led 13-1, but Homer avoided the mercy rule by rallying for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
SoHi then led 14-5 after six and put up five more runs in the seventh.
Josh Pieh got the start for the Stars, going 2 2-3 innings and giving up a run and a hit while walking three and striking out two. Riley Johnson came on and gave up four runs — just one earned — on three hits while walking one and striking out three.
Derrick Jones closed out the game with two innings of solid work. He gave up an unearned run on three hits while striking out three and walking nobody.
The Stars got to Homer starter Austin Ceccarelli for 13 runs — six earned — on 10 hits. Ceccarelli struck out six and walked two.
Malachi Raymond pitched the final two innings for Homer, giving up six runs — five earned — on six hits. Raymond struck out one and walked two.
Atticus Gibson and Andrew Pieh led SoHi’s 16-hit attack. Gibson was 3 for 3 with three runs and four RBIs, while Andrew Pieh was 3 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs.
Also for SoHi, Daltyn Deborski went 2 for 5 and score five runs, while Josh Pieh was 2 for 5 with two runs and Riley Johnson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Jacob Belger added two runs for the Stars, while Levi Mickelson had two RBIs and Evan Appelhans had two runs.
For the Mariners, Coda Wood was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Josiah Raymond was 2 for 4. Harrison Metz and Liam Houlihan had two runs apiece for Homer.
Kenai-Redington baseball canceled
The baseball game between Kenai Central and Redington scheduled for the Kenai Little League Fields on Thursday was canceled due to field conditions.
