The Soldotna girls finished fifth in the Maroon bracket of the Anchorage Kia Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout Saturday after a 45-41 loss to Palmer in the tournament third-place game, wrapping up the weekend with a 1-3 record.
Brittani Blossom and Danica Schmidt paced SoHi with 13 points apiece, while Palmer was led by Kassidy Bowman’s 14.
The Stars led 13-9 early but Palmer closed the gap to 20-19 by halftime. Palmer took the lead in the third quarter by outscoring SoHi 15-11 and never gave it up en route to the win.
In the tournament’s Maroon fourth-place game, the Kenai girls lost 45-41 to Bartlett, leaving the Kardinals with sixth place. Kenai finished the tournament with a 1-3 record.
Kenai led 21-19 at halftime and maintained a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Bartlett rallied with a 15-9 fourth-quarter run to win it.
Brooke Satathite scored 11 points but ran into foul trouble late to lead Kenai and teammate Lexy Carrasco added 10.
Homer Winter Carnival
The Kotzebue girls and the Homer boys claimed tournament championships Saturday in Homer.
The Kotzebue girls went 3-0 over the weekend at the round-robin tournament with a 44-40 win over Dillingham, as did the Homer boys, who defeated Mt. Edgecumbe 46-40 in the de facto championship game.
Koby Etzwiler led the way with 12 points for Homer. Etzwiler drained 5 for 6 shots from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help the Mariners clinch the crown.
The Mariners led 22-18 at halftime, then locked5 down on defense by holding the Braves to just three points in the third quarter.
The Homer girls capped a 2-1 weekend with a 32-27 win Saturday over Mt. Edgecumbe. Kaylee Veldstra paced the Mariners with eight points in a balanced scoring effort, and Rylyn Todd and Anna Godfrey both chipped in seven.
After a slow start, the girls squad outscored Edgecumbe 13-6 in the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead. The Braves came back in the third, cutting the lead to 25-22, but the Mariners held on to win.
In other games, the Kotzebue hoops squad swept Dillingham, with the girls winning 44-40 and the Kotzebue boys winning 55-32.
Valdez Elks Tournament
The Kenai Central boys fell short of the tournament championship with a 66-46 loss to Valdez in the final.
Senior Luke Beiser was named tournament MVP for the boys, while Preben Strende was named to the boys All-tournament team.
Bennett Hinkle went 9 for 12 from the floor to lead Valdez with 22 points, while Jalen Freeman added 13. The Buccaneers got off to a fast start with a 15-8 run in the first quarter, then led 27-21 at halftime. Leading 44-35 entering the fourth quarter, Valdez wrapped up the win by outscoring Kenai 22-11 the rest of the way.
The Seward girls took fourth place in the girls tournament with a 30-27 win over North Pole on Saturday. Coral Petrosius fueled the Seahawks with 20 points.
In the defensive contest, Seward led 21-17 after three quarters and held North Pole to just two field goals the rest of the way to secure the win.
The Seward boys finished sixth after a 50-37 loss to Bethel in the boys fourth-place game. Zen Petrosius paced the Seahawks with 18 points while Connor Spanos chipped in 10.
Seward led 23-21 at halftime, but Bethel won the third quarter 12-6 to take the lead and never looked back.
Ninilchik Invitational
The Kodiak boys and girls basketball programs swept the tournament championships Saturday afternoon in Ninilchik.
The Kodiak boys won with a 79-39 win over Nikolaevsk, while the Kodiak girls prevailed in overtime over Ninilchik 38-34. Both squads finished a perfect 3-0 over the weekend.
In the boys title game, Glenn Penemoro led Kodiak with 17 points, while teammate Louis Rocheleau added 12 on four 3-pointers. Kalenik Molodih paced Nikolaevsk with 19 points and JD Mumey had 10.
Kodiak rocketed off to a 21-5 start and led 44-21 at halftime, then finished the job with a 17-8 fourth-quarter run.
In the girls title game, Kodiak outscored Ninilchik 4-0 in the overtime period, all on free throws, to clinch the victory. Ellysia Kernan led the way with 11 points and Krystal Pascua added 10.
DeeAnn White paced Ninilchik with 18 points, while teammate Isabella Koch added six.
Earlier in the day, White exploded for 31 points to lead the Ninilchik girls to a 48-34 win over Akiak.
Ninilchik led 20-19 at the half, but outscored Akiak 17-12 in the third to distance itself and finished it off with an 11-3 fourth-quarter run.
Miranda Demientieff paced Akiak with 14 points. In addition to White, Olivia Delgado scored eight points for Ninilchik.
Also in the boys tournament, Nikolaevsk beat Effie Kokrine 68-56. Kalenik Molodih pumped in 27 points for Nikolaevsk while teammate JD Mumey dropped in 16. Also for the Warriors, Zachary Trail chipped in eight and Michael Trail had 10.
The game was close throughout, as Nikolaevsk led 32-29 at the half and 51-46 after three quarters. Finally, in the fourth, the Warriors pulled away by outscoring Effie 17-10.
The Ninilchik boys finished their weekend with a 58-46 loss to Akiak. Jake Clark paced Ninilchik with 17 points, while Tristan White pumped in 15 and Cole Hadro had 12.
The Nikolaevsk girls put a period on their tournament with a 54-29 win over Effie Kokrine. Markiana Yakunin led the Warriors with 20 points, including a 9-for-16 day from the foul line, while Elizabeth Fefelov added 17.
Effie Kokrine led 11-9 after one quarter, but the Warriors won the second 17-2 to take a 26-13 halftime lead, then outscored Effie 19-8 in the third to effectively ice the win.
