The Peninsula Oilers completed their season-opening homestand with a 9-1-2 record by sweeping the Oceanside (San Diego) Waves. Peninsula finished off the sweep with a 7-5 victory Saturday, extending the Oilers’ unbeaten streak to nine games. Two of those contests were ties.

After taking today off, the Oilers jump into their Alaska Baseball League schedule by playing nine road games in seven days. The Oilers start the trip Monday with a 7 p.m. game at the Anchorage Bucs, a team that they will face in a five-game series.

Sean Mason got the win for the Oilers, pitching 6 2-3 innings. Mason recorded his first seven outs with strikeouts en route to nine strikeouts for the game.

Mason said in a postgame interview on 1140 AM that his fastball was working really well for him. Mason gave up seven hits, two walks and two runs.

Cody Richey and local product Mitchel Daugherty also got time on the hill. Richey went 1 1-3 innings with no hits or runs and one strikeout, while Daugherty struggled with two hits, three earned runs, two walks and only one out. Tyler Gibson recorded the save with a clean sheet for the final two outs, throwing only three total pitches. The game ended on a double play that went from second base to shortstop and ended at first.

The Oilers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Alex Rubanowitz singled with one away, then Josh Rose doubled to score Rubanowitz. Rose would eventually score on an error by the catcher.

Peninsula made it 4-0 in the fourth. With one out, Rose doubled, then Jake Sandlin followed with a double to score Rose. Mylz Jones then followed with a single to scored the second run of the inning.

The Waves scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the gap to 4-2, but the Oilers responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sandlin started the inning with a single, then Jones doubled to put runners on second and third. AJ Hernandez then singled to scored Sandlin and Jones.

In the seventh inning, the Oilers tacked on another insurance run. Gabriel Munoz started the inning with a walk. He would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Sandlin.

Jones led the Oilers hitting, going 3 for 5 with a run, while Hernandez, Rubanowitz, Rose and Sandlin each provided two hits. Hernandez and Sandlin also had two RBIs each.
