The visiting Seward football team defeated Valdez 54-50 on Saturday in Denali Conference play.
The Seahawks had lost to the Buccaneers 66-36 in Seward in nonconference play earlier in the season. That game was played as nine-man football, as was Saturday’s tilt. Seward coach Tyler Mallory said he and his squad learned a lot from that first nine-man game, and that was on display as Seward moved to 1-1 in the league and 2-2 overall. Valdez also is 1-1 and 2-2.
Seward quarterback Tommy Cronin scored on a run with 11 seconds left to give his squad the victory. Mallory said in a text message that Cronin had a great game, and that Brett Gilmore had a touchdown catch, Landen DeRoos had a TD catch and Kupono Albino ran hard all game and had a score.
