The Grace Christian girls soccer team defeated Kenai Central 3-1 on Saturday at The Dome in Anchorage.
The Kardinals fall to 4-2-1 overall. Earlier this season, Grace and Kenai had split a pair of 1-0 games.
Kenai trailed 2-1 at the half. Kenai’s goal came from Kate Wisnewski, assisted by Kylie Verkuilen.
“We had possession most of the second half, just couldn’t get it in the net,” Kenai assistant coach Amanda Trower wrote in a text message.
Grace boys 3, Kenai 0
The Grizzlies notched a nonconference victory over the Kardinals on Saturday at The Dome. Kenai falls to 2-4 overall and also lost to Grace earlier this season by 3-0 and 3-1 scores.
“We had a lot of shots and chances that we just didn’t finish,” Kenai coach Shane Lopez said. “Those guys are a really good team. Give credit to our guys for fighting. I think we played them better this game than we did in past games.”
The coach said Ky Calvert did a good job at outside midfield of sticking with a fast opponent who was good on the ball. Lopez also said Koda Poulin and Daniel Shelden were good on defense, adding that the last two goals happened on weird plays.
“The score line didn’t reflect how well they played,” Lopez said.
Redington girls 4, Nikiski 0
The Bulldogs fell to 0-4 with the nonconference loss to the Huskies.
Nikiski coach Angie Coelho said in a text message that her team played hard, but was frustrated by the outcome.
“We’re looking forward to working on our own field next week,” Coelho texted.
Emma Weeks was in goal for the Bulldogs, while Coelho wrote that Brooke Abel rotated through all positions on the field and did all of them well.
Nikiski boys 3, Redington 3
The Bulldogs are 0-3-1 after tying the Huskies in a nonconference affair on the road.
Redington led 3-2 at the half, but Nikiski was able to find the equalizer in the second frame.
The goals for the Bulldogs were Ayden Fleming assisted by David Weathers, Alex Anderson assisted by Jakeup Martin, and Weathers unassisted.
“It was a back and forth game and a great day for soccer,” Nikiski coach Jeremy Garrett texted. “David and Alex were extremely focused today, all over the field, and gave the team much needed energy.
“Robert Isabell has been a defensive juggernaut all season and today was probably his best outing.”
Homer girls 6, Palmer 2
The visiting Mariners notched a nonconference victory over the Moose behind hat tricks from Debbie Weisser and Sela Weisser. Homer is now 4-2-2.
Sela Weisser, Ava Halstead, Minadora Reutov and Lily King had assists.
“We did a good job widening the field, finding open people, communicating and getting back to what’s been working all year long,” Homer coach Mike Tozzo said. “The goals came pretty easy because we found ourselves in good position to score.”
Palmer boys 6, Homer 1
The host Moose collected a nonconference win over the Mariners. Homer falls to 2-6 overall.
Palmer led 4-0 at the half. Homer’s goal came from Casey Otis, assisted by Jack Hrenchir.
“We’re still working on unifying as a team,” Homer coach Adam Diaz said. “The effort is always there. Team chemistry is what the focus will be the rest of the season. Once we figure out a way to make that work, hopefully the scores will look more successful than they have been looking.”
Diaz gave credit to Hunter Green for working through injuries and setbacks and trying to be a shutdown, key role player. Green normally plays left midfield and left defense.
