The Kenai Central girls soccer team improved to 4-1-1 overall with an 8-0, nonconference victory over Redington on Friday.
The Kardinals took a 3-0 lead after the first half. Kate Wisnewski and Rylie Sparks started off the game with unassisted tallies. Alexis Taylor then scored on an assist from Wisnewski.
Kori Moore scored with help from Cali Holmes to start the second half.
Maddie Malone then scored on an assist from Kylie Verkuilen, and Wisnewski scored on a header off a cross from Verkuilen.
To finish the scoring, Holmes scored off an assist from Wisnewski, and Valerie Villegas converted a penalty kick.
Malone and Tait Cooper shared the shutout in goal.
Kenai boys 13, Redington 0
The visiting Kardinals notched a nonconference victory over the Huskies to move to 2-3 overall.
Wade James and Samuel Baisden each had a pair of goals for the Kards. Also scoring for Kenai were Gavin Langham, Landen Cialek, Sawyer Vann, Enrique Mercado, Aloshia Cross, Bridger Beck, Koda Poulin and Daniel Shelden.
Gavin Langham had the shutout in goal.
“I’m proud of the guys for moving the ball around really well,” Kenai coach Shane Lopez said. “They stayed collected defensively.”
Grace Christian girls 1, Homer 0
The Grizzlies notched a nonconference victory over the Mariners at The Dome in Anchorage. Homer falls to 3-2-2 overall.
“I thought we played really hard, but we played defensively,” Homer coach Mike Tozzo said. “We definitely got the attack going in the second half and had a few more chances to score.”
Tozzo said his team had trouble stringing together passes and mounting a sustained attack.
“It was a hard-fought game and both teams played well,” Tozzo said. “I think the next time we play it will be much the same. It was a pretty even match.”
Tozzo said Sydney Shelby and Mariah McGuire were both solid and center back, while Felicia Weisser made some tough saves to keep it at 1-0.
Grace Christian boys 8, Homer 0
The Grizzlies topped the Mariners in nonconference action at The Dome in Anchorage. Homer is now 2-5 overall.
“I’m always proud of the guys, regardless of who we go against,” Homer coach Adam Diaz said. “Just stepping on the field takes a lot of courage.
“The thing that hurt us the most is we had a few injuries during the game and people stepping into positions they haven’t played before.”
Diaz said without a lot of practice time, his squad has to learn by playing. He is still thinks the team is fine-tuning the things it takes to win the games that count.
Houston girls 7, Nikiski 0
The visiting Bulldogs dropped a nonconference contest against the Hawks to fall to 0-3 overall.
Nikiski coach Angie Coelho said in an email her team spent more time on offense and the result was a goal by Dani Thies, assisted by Brooke Able.
Palmer boys 14, Nikiski 0
The visiting Bulldogs lost to the Moose in nonconference action to fall to 0-3.
Palmer led 9-0 at the half.
Nikiski coach Jeremy Garrett said in a text message that the Bulldogs changed goalies at halftime and added an extra defender on defense, providing a better and strong defensive line. Garrett said the team is looking forward to wrapping up the road trip today with a game against Redington.
