Sadie Fox, a Soldotna High School graduate now skiing as a sophomore at the University of Alaska Anchorage, took seventh in the junior women’s 7.5-kilometer classic race Monday in the SuperTour Finals at Birch Hill in Fairbanks.

Fox finished the course in 26 minutes, 4.1 seconds, while Hannah Halvorsen of Sugar Bowl Academy won at 24:00.6. Anchorage’s Hunter Wonders, who won the men’s Under-18 and over 10K in January at the Besh Cup at Tsalteshi Trails, won the men’s 11.25K junior classic race in 31:44.9.

The skiathlon, or a race where the first half uses the classic technique and the second half uses the freestyle technique, featured the country’s best skiers.

In the men’s 22.5K skiathlon, Scott Patterson of the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center took first in 59:17.6.

The women’s 15K skiathlon was dominated by Jessica Diggins of Stratton Mountain School. Diggins, who won two medals at the World Championships last month in Lahti, Finland, finished at 42:17.1. APU’s Kikkan Randall, who also medaled at the World Championships, won the race for second place at 22:28.8.

The event continues Wednesday with freestyle sprints, Friday with relays and Sunday with a women’s 30K classic and men’s 50K classic.
