Kenai Central’s Jayna Boonstra and Soldotna’s Quinn Cox did the best in a unique format at the Mile 12 Ski Trails on Friday and Saturday at the Seward Ski Invitational.
At the meet, the Kenai Peninsula’s four ski teams — Kenai, Soldotna, Seward and Homer — all skied at separate times. Kenai and Soldotna skied Friday, while Seward and Homer skied Saturday.
The goal for teams of three skiers was to get as many points as possible. Each skier had 30 minutes to collect points by skiing as many loops as possible. The Paradise Loop was five points, the Luna Loop was three points and the Sitzmark Loop was a point.
The team collecting the most points was the Soldotna squad of Carter Cannava, Levi Mickelson and Avery Ciufo. That team collected 80 points.
Kenai’s top team of Jack Laker, Tyler Hippchen and Grace Morrow had 79 points, Homer’s top team of Eryn Field, Frida Renner and Elena Badajos had 75 points, and Seward’s top team of Aloshia Cross, Belladona Proietti and John VanBuskirk collected 73 points.
Kenai’s Boonstra had the most points for the girls with 29, while Soldotna’s Erika Arthur and Katie Delker were right behind with 28.
For the boys, Quinn Cox had the most points with 34, while Hippchen had 33 and SoHi’s Foster Boze had 31.
Seward head coach Zachary Cureton noted Cross had 30 points and Cody Bryden had 29 points. Cureton said the performance was exciting because those two skiers haven’t finished that close to the top all season.
