The Soldotna baseball team started its season with a pair of games Thursday in Wasilla.
In the Buddy Dale Tournament, the Stars topped Homer 11-10 in six innings. Then in a game that didn’t count for the tournament, Soldotna lost 11-7 in five innings to Wasilla.
Soldotna coach Robb Quelland said the weekend is all about gaining experience for his team. Quelland said he has just three returning players from his 2019 team. The 2020 season didn’t happen due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The year off really hurt the younger players,” Quelland said.
In the game against Homer, Derrick Jones had a walkoff single to score Matthew Graham for the victory.
Harrison Metz had three RBIs for Homer, while Atticus Gibson had three RBIs for Soldotna. Metz and Austin Ceccarelli had two hits for the Mariners.
