Volleyball roundup: SoHi splits with Palmer; Homer splits on road; Seward travels to Southeast; Nikiski sweeps in Anchorage

The host Soldotna volleyball team defeated Palmer 3-0 on Friday before falling to the Moose 3-2 on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference action.

The Stars are now 3-1 in the league and 3-3 overall.

Friday, Soldotna won 25-23, 25-14 and 25-20.

Veronica Crane had 14 digs for SoHi, while Sadie Lane had 11 and Morgan Simac had eight. Sarah Brown led the way with 22 assists.

Simac had eight kills, while Lane had six and Kate Curtis had four. Hallie Fischer had two blocks, while Cassidy Kruse and Simac each had a block. SoHi also had 13 aces, with Lane getting four, Fischer getting three and Curtis getting two.

Saturday, Palmer won 25-23, 15-25, 27-25, 25-27 and 15-13.

Crane had 27 digs, while Simac had 23 and Brown had 13. Brown had 37 assists, while Crane had five.

Lane and Kruse each had 14 kills, while Simac had 10. Kruse had six blocks, while Simac, Lane and Abygale Shaeffer had two. Shaeffer also had five aces, while Curtis and Crane each had three.

Soldotna travels to take on Nikiski at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Homer splits weekend conference road trip

The Homer volleyball team split in Southcentral Conference action on the road in Anchorage, defeating Grace Christian 3-0 before losing to Mountain City Christian Academy 3-2.

The Mariners are now 1-1 in the league and 2-1 overall.

Against Grace, Homer coach Ian Overson texted that his squad started off slow, but then everything came together and his team’s effort was on full display.

Reilly Sue Baker had 13 kills, while Alysha Nyvall had 15 assists, Rebecca Trowbridge had 12 assists and Maddy Miotke had five aces.

Overson texted that the match against the Lions was close, with MCCA winning the final game 16-14.

Channing Lowney had 16 kills, while Nyvall had seven aces and Brightly Thoning had two blocks.

Homer plays in the Slamma Jamma tournament in Sitka on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Seward completes trip to Southeast

The Seward volleyball team traveled to Sitka for nonconference matches.

Thursday, the Seahawks defeated Mt. Edgecumbe 25-16, 22-25 and 15-7 before losing to Sitka 25-22, 25-16 and 26-24.

Friday, Seward topped Mt. Edgecumbe 25-22, 25-24 and 25-17 before losing to Sitka 19-25, 25-18 and 15-8.

Saturday, the Seahawks got the best of Mt. Edgecumbe 25-20, 25-20 and 27-25 before falling to Sitka 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18.

Seward head coach Jodi Kurtz said in a text message that all of the matches were good, and that her players performed great as a team.

Nikiski sweeps conference trip on road

The Nikiski volleyball team went on the road to Anchorage to defeat Mountain City Christian Academy 3-0 on Friday and Grace Christian 3-0 on Saturday in Southcentral Conference action.

The Bulldogs are now 2-1 in nontournament play and 2-1 in the league.

Friday, Nikiski won 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19. Alexa Iyatunguk had 10 kills for the Bulldogs, while Ashlynne Playle had seven kills. Kailey Stynsberg had 15 digs, while Evelyn Reichert had 11 digs.

Saturday, Nikiski knocked off Grace 25-10, 25-21 and 25-8. Iyatunguk and Playle each had 10 kills, while Mandee Roofe had seven kills and three blocks. Stynsberg had 10 digs, while Avery Ellis and Reichert added six digs apiece.

Reichert had four aces, while Abby White had three aces.
