Sunday: Lower Columbia rallies to win Coz wood bat tourney

The Lower Columbia (Washington) Baseball Club defeated the American Legion Twins 4-3 in eight innings Sunday at the Kenai Little League fields to win the championship of the Bill Miller/Lance Coz Wood Bat Tournament.

The Twins led 3-0 entering the top of the seventh in a game that was played in light rain, but Lower Columbia was able to rally for three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to wrap up the title before flying home to the Lower 48.

The Twins went up 1-0 in the second when Derrick Jones walked and scored on a two-out single by Levi Mickelson. In the third, Hunter Williams singled, went to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a ground-out and scored on an error. In the sixth, Atticus Gibson doubled and Gibson’s courtesy runner, Zane Pellegrom, scored on a sacrifice fly by Jace Crall.

In the seventh, against Gibson, Easton Marshall singled and Logan Bodily walked. Jacob Lindstrom then reached on an error, scoring Marshall and moving Bodily to third. Bodily then scored on a ground-out while Lindstrom went to third. After Gibson walked Austin Lindquist, Williams came in at pitcher and another error scored Bodily to tie it.

In the eight, Marshall led off with a home run to right field off Williams.

Malakai Olson and Braden Smith each pitched three scoreless innings for the Twins, giving up two hits apiece.

For Lower Columbia, Kolten Lindstrom gave up a run on two hits in four innings, Talon McGrorty gave up an unearned run on a hit in two innings and Deker Bartell gave up a run on a hit in two innings.

Williams was 2 for 4 for the Twins, while Marshall was 3 for 5 with two runs for Lower Columbia.

Also at the tournament, but not technically part of the tournament, the Twins A team topped Bartlett 23-0 on Sunday. Jack Harper allowed no runs and no hits over five innings for the Twins.

Daniel Steffensen had three runs and three RBIs, Colby Sturman was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs, Jett Brophy had two RBIs, Gabe Joanis was 2 for 2 with three runs, Matthew Schilling had three runs, Jacob Joanis was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs, Wyatt Gagnon was 2 for 3 with four runs and two RBIs, Harper had two runs and two RBIs, Keoni Beddow had three runs and Kelani Beddow had two RBIs.

The tournament concluded with a scrimmage between the Twins A and AA teams.
