Sunday: Soldotna baseball defeats Kodiak

The Soldotna baseball team defeated Kodiak 4-0 on Sunday in Northern Lights Conference action at the Soldotna Little League fields.

The two squads had to be granted a waiver by the Alaska School Activities Association to play the makeup game Sunday. The game also served as SoHi’s home opener. SoHi is now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The Stars had to get past Kodiak pitcher Malakai Olson. The Stars are familiar with Olson, because he played for the American Legion Post 20 Twins last season.

He got on such a roll last season that he pitched for the Twins in the semifinals of the state tournament and lost 1-0 to Service, giving up a run on six hits in six innings.

Sunday, Olson went all six innings for Kodiak and gave up four runs — three earned — on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.

Olson was outdueled by Matthew Schilling and Easton Hawkins of the Stars. Schilling went five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out two.

Hawkins closed the door with two scoreless innings, giving up no hits and walks while striking out two.

Schilling also led the Stars at the plate by going 2 for 3.
