The Kenai Central soccer teams swept Homer on Tuesday in Peninsula Conference action at Ed Hollier Field in Kenai.
The Kardinals girls topped the Mariners 1-0. Kenai moves to 4-0-0 in the league and 8-0-0, while the Mariners drop to 1-3-0 and 3-5-0. Homer coach Mike Tozzo said in a text message his team played well, giving up just an own goal.
Kenai coach Dan Verkuilen wrote in a text message that Kylee Verkuilen got a pass to Chloe Goldsby, who hit a nice shot that bounced in off a Homer defender.
“We had many opportunities but it was one of those games where we just didn’t finish,” Verkuilen wrote.
The Kardinals boys notched a 3-0 victory to move to 2-0-2 and 5-2-2. Homer is 1-2-1 and 3-4-1.
Wade James had a hat trick for the Kards, with Enrique Mercado notching two assists. Ezekiel Yragui had the shutout in goal.
Kenai coach Shane Lopez wrote in a text message Carson Grimm had an excellent game in the midfield creating opportunities and defending well. Lopez added that Landen Cialek had a great game on defense by coming out into the midfield to win the ball early.
Homer coach Adam Diaz was happy with his team’s effort.
“Today was a true test of the resilience and dedication to play from beginning to end,” Diaz wrote in a text message. “Unfortunately we did not win today but we reinforced what we already knew, which is playing every second between each whistle.”
Diaz singled out Jake Tappan for his determination.
