Twins get 3rd seed at state tournament

The American Legion Twins will be the third seed when the 71st State Tournament opens Thursday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Eagle River and Service both tied for the top spot in the league at 14-2, with Eagle River taking the top seed due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Kenai and Chugiak both tied with a 12-4 record, with the Twins taking the third seed due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Dimond is fifth at 11-5, Palmer is sixth at 9-7, West is seventh at 8-8 and South is eighth at 6-10. Wasilla and Juneau also were 6-10, but South got into the state tournament due to a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Wasilla and Juneau will be joined by Ketchikan, the AK Wild, East and Bartlett in the 10th Annual Matson Invitational.

At the State Tournament, there are two pools of four teams each. Pool play is Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the top two from each pool advancing to Monday’s semifinals. The championship game is Tuesday.

The Twins, seeking a state title to add to those in 1991, 1995, 2012 and 2016, open the tournament Thursday against Palmer at 1 p.m. After taking Friday off, the Twins face South on Saturday at 3 p.m. Pool play ends for the Twins on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Eagle River.

Post 20 just played Palmer and Eagle River on the road on July 11. The Twins lost to Palmer 8-1 before losing to Eagle River 5-4 in nine innings.

The Twins played South all the way back on June 10, beating the Wolverines 6-5 in the conference game and 7-6 in the nonconference game.

In last year’s tournament, the Twins lost 3-2 to South, but then defeated Chugiak 6-4 and Bartlett 11-1 to make the semifinals against Service. The Twins fell in the semifinals 8-7 to the Cougars.

Service would go on to lose 4-3 in the championship to Eagle River, which won its second straight state title.
