The Kenai Central volleyball team swept nonconference opponent Nome on Thursday at Kenai Central High School.
The Kardinals are now 2-0 in nontournament play. Nome, which tied for seventh at the Class 3A state tournament last season, is the fourth team from that state tournament that the Kardinals have defeated this young season. Kenai was the runner-up at state.
Kenai defeated Sitka in a nontournament match and in the final of the Shayna Pritchard Memorial Tournament. The Kardinals defeated Homer at both a jamboree and in pool play at the Shayna Pritchard Memorial Volleyball Tournament. The Kardinals also defeated Bethel in Pritchard pool play.
The scores against Nome were 25-12, 25-15 and 25-14.
Emma Beck had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Kardinals, while Cali Holmes had six kills, Grace Beiser had five kills and Jorgi Phillips had 18 assists and 10 aces.
Also for Kenai, Kimberly Chanley had 12 digs and three aces, and Camilla Gonzalez had two aces.
Monroe Catholic 3, Nikiski 2
The Bulldogs went on the road Thursday to push last year’s fourth-place finisher at the Class 3A state tourney to the limit.
The Rams won 20-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 15-13.
Ashlynne Playle had 10 kills and nine blocks for Nikiski, while Avery Ellis had four aces.
Also for the Bulldogs, Avery White had 18 digs, Kailey Stynsberg had 25 digs, Maggie Grenier had eight assists and Savanna Stock had 10 assists.
