Wasilla girls, Palmer boys capture NLC hoops crowns

The Wasilla girls and Palmer boys basketball teams won Northern Lights Conference titles Saturday at Soldotna High School.

The Wasilla girls, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 1 Colony 69-46 for the title. The Warriors had been 0-3 against the Knights this season before Saturday.

Mylee Anderson had 17 for the Warriors, while Savannah Kroon had 14, Layla Hays had 11, Katie Jackson had 10, Mielee Merchant had 8, Kyndra Boling had 5 and Livia Breshears had 2.

For Colony, Hallie Clark had 19 while Tonya Karpow had 7, Ally Shelley had 6, Ashlyn Waggoner, Bella Shelley and Ella Hopkins had 4, and Morgan Ainsworth had 2.

The Palmer boys, seeded No. 4, topped No. 2 Wasilla 61-58 for the crown.

For the Moose, Lukas Owen led the way with 18, while Logan Rolston had 12, Isaac Evans had 8, Nolan Garner had 6, K.J. Henry and Tony Sheldon had 5, and Westin Bullock had 3.

For the Warriors, Noah Kroon had 15, while Ledger Lusk had 11, Gavin Morris and Tristan Morton had 8, Eli Cox had 7, Barak Wagle had 6, Ryder Howard had 2 and Aiden Pharr had 1.

The No. 3 Mountain City Christian Academy girls defeated No. 4 Palmer 78-38 for third place.

For the Lions, Keelie Kronberger had 28, Morgan Maldonado had 19, Jasmine Schaeffer had 18, Nyamach Mathot had 6, Maliyah Alex had 3, and Nyawuow Majiok and Jieaya Saitini had 2.

For Palmer, Larkin Christiansen had 13, Maija Huckabay had 9, Kaelyn Downey had 6, Abby Pettit had 5, Presley Wright and Lily Muilenburg had 2.

The Palmer girls took fourth place by defeating No. 5 Soldotna 43-42. The Stars finished 11-14 overall.

Hope Hillyer had 11 for Soldotna, while Kaytlin McAnelly and Anaulie Sedivy had 9, Isabelle Cruz had 5, and Juliet Innes and Alyssa McDonald had 4.

For Palmer, Theresa Arreola and Pettit had 14, while Christiansen had 8, Jasmine Hephner had 3, and Huckabay and Wright had 2.

The No. 1 Colony boys defeated No. 3 Soldotna 74-60 for third place.

For the Stars, Izaiah Gilbert had 16, while Easton Hawkins had 15, Andrew Pieh had 13, Cameron LaRoque had 11, Jace O’Reagan had 4 and Jayden Stuyvesant had 1.

For the Knights, Brady Reaves had 14, Nile DeLand and Jordan Sterling had 12, Blake Dinkel and Ridge Spencer had 11, Eli Whitworth had 7, LJ Jones had 5 and Nick Bailey had 1.

Soldotna then came back and toppled No. 5 Kodiak 69-61 for fourth place.

For the Stars (15-12), Gilbert had 16, LaRoque had 15, O’Reagan and Pieh had 11, Zac Buckbee had 6, Hawkins had 5, Stuyvesant had 3 and Theo Huff had 2.

For Kodiak, Kelly Ticman had 20, Liam Danelski had 14, Aron Paguio had 9, Antonio Basuel and Shan Casabar had 8 and Cowen Mangampo had 2.

In the cheerleading competition at the tournament, Wasilla finished first, Soldotna was second, Kodiak was third, Palmer was fourth and MCCA was fifth.
