Wednesday hoops: Ninilchik girls open Southern Conference tourney with loss

The No. 5-seeded Ninilchik girls basketball team opened the Southern Conference Tournament with a 49-8 loss to No. 4 Unalaska on Wednesday at Lumen Christi in Anchorage.

The Wolverines will not play until 9 a.m. Friday. They will await the loser of the No. 3 Lumen vs. No. 2 Susitna Valley, which happens at 3 p.m. Thursday. The other Thursday game features No. 1 Seward against Unalaska at 6 p.m.

Lilly Berger had 6 for Ninilchik, while Bella Berger had 2.

The boys tournament is expected to be a tight race for two state berths and did not disappoint on the first day. No. 4 Unalaska defeated No. 5 Lumen 43-39 in overtime.

Thursday in boys action, No. 2 Seward faces No. 3 Ninilchik at 4:30 p.m. and No. 1 Su Valley takes on Unalaska at 7:30 p.m.
