Wednesday: Twins sweep Wasilla

The visiting American Legion Twins swept Wasilla on Wednesday to improve to 7-2 in the league and 13-8 overall.

With four other league games not reported yet Wednesday, the Twins were tied for third place with Eagle River. Teams play 16 league games, and the top eight make state.

Wasilla falls to 5-6 and 8-12.

The Twins won the first and league game 15-4 in five innings thanks to a monster 13-run fifth inning.

Wasilla had taken a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Derrick Jones, who allowed four runs on four hits while walking three.

The Twins relievers and offense assured Jones would not stay on the hook for the loss.

Andrew Pieh worked 2 2-3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out three. Atticus Gibson did not give up a run or hit in recording the final out of the game.

Charlie Chamberlain led the Twins on offense, going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a run.

Hunter Williams was 2 for 4, Gibson had two RBIs, Jace Crall was 2 for 4 with two runs, Jones had two runs, Levi Mickelson had two runs, Pieh had two runs and Malakai Olson had two runs and two RBIs.

The Twins won the nonleague game 11-9 in four innings. The local nine trailed 9-4, but scored seven runs in the top of the fourth.

Simon Grenier worked 1 2-3 scoreless innings for the win, allowing just a hit while striking out one.

Jones and Jayden Stuyvesant had two runs for the Twins, while Mickelson, Grenier and Olson had two RBIs.

The Twins stay on the road to face East in a pair of league games at 1 and 3 p.m. Thursday.
