Weekend Oilers roundup: Peninsula loses to Pilots, Miners, swept by Chinooks

A tough road trip continued for the Peninsula Oilers over the weekend, as they lost 1-0 to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Friday, 4-3 to the Mat-Su Miners on Saturday, and were swept 12-7 and 4-2 by the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks on Sunday.

The streaking Miners have moved past the Oilers into second place in the league. Mat-Su has won seven straight and is 19-13, one game behind the first place Anchorage Bucs at 18-10.

The Oilers, who have lost all five on the road trip, are 16-16 and four games out of first place. The Pilots are 13-16 and 5.5 games back, while the Chinooks are 10-21 and 9.5 games back.

The top four teams make the playoffs.

Peninsula has three games left on the seven-day, eight-game road trip. The Oilers play the Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage at 6 p.m. Monday, play the Pilots at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday at Mulcahy, and play the Chinooks at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak.

Friday against the Pilots, four Pilots pitchers combined to no-hit the Oilers.

Tyler Stewart went the first five innings, walking one and striking out six. David Heefner then struck out two in two innings, Drew Welk struck out one in an inning, and Payton Allen stuck out one in an inning.

The Oilers staff was nearly as good. Cameron Teper went five innings, giving up a run on five hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Mose Hayes, a product of Homer High School and the Post 20 Twins, went two scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Zach Camp finished with a scoreless and hitless inning.

The only run of the game scored in the fifth inning, when Dylan Marx tripled to score Logan Sanders.

Saturday against the Miners, Mat-Su rallied in the bottom of the ninth to score twice and walk off on the Oilers.

Brandyn Durand led off the inning with a home run off Nicholai Arbach to tie the game. Arbach then got the next two outs before Ryan Cochran singled and Nick Bisaccia walked, bringing Camp in for Arbach.

Christian Perez then reached on an error, and Chase Wilcox singled to end the game.

The Oilers had taken a 2-0 lead after four innings, but Mat-Su tied it with five runs in the fifth. Peninsula went back up by one in the sixth.

Cody New went five innings for the Oilers, giving up two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six.

Arbach gave up two runs — one earned — on three hits in 3 2-3 innings, while Camp gave up the one hit.

Max Roffwarg was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Oilers, while Zakary Farris was 2 for 4.

In the 12-7 loss to the Chinooks, the Oilers committed seven errors and lost despite outhitting Chugiak-Eagle River 11-5.

Petey Soto was 2 for 3 with two runs for the Oilers, while Cole Dawson was 2 for 3.

In the 4-2 loss, Gavin Alveti gave up two runs — one earned — in 6 2-3 innings for the Chinooks. Louis Zulaica came on to get the final out.

Both teams scored twice in the first inning, while the Chinooks tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

For the Oilers, Eddie Leon gave up three runs — two earned — in four innings, while Colby Reynolds gave up a run in two innings.

Aidan Sullivan was 2 for 2 for the Oilers, while New was 2 for 3.
