Brayden Taylor, a fourth-grade student at Soldotna Elementary, placed first in the district Elks "Hoop Shoot" free throw contest for his age group, 8-9 year-olds. The finalists went to a state competition where Brayden placed second. Evan Hatfield, district representative for the Elks Hoop Shoot, presented Brayden with his trophy recently at an assembly at Soldotna Elementary.

Ready to serve Two area emergency responders are preparing for another military deployment. Brad Nelson, Health and Safety Officer with the Central Emergency Services, and Sgt. Larry Erickson with the Alaska State Troopers will be deploying with the Alaska Air National Guard to parts of the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Nelson was a member of the Alaska State Troopers for 7 years and has been with the Central Emergency Services for the past 7 years. He started his military career as a member of the 176th Security Police Squadron and has been with the Alaska Air National Guard for 20 years. This will be MSgt. Nelson's fourth deployment and he is deploying as the First Sergeant with the 176th Civil Engineering Squadron. Erickson has been with the Alaska State Troopers for 21 ½ years. He started his military career with the United States Marine Corps and has been with the Alaska Air National Guard for the past 9 years. This will be TSgt. Larry Erickson's second deployment and he is deploying with the 176th Operations Support Squadron. Their families wish them a speedy and safe return. (Submitted photo)
